What is the 3v3 Warmup: 2-touch volleyball drill? 3v3 Warmup: 2-touch is a volleyball warmup with three on the court per side and two touches per side. Setup

Three players on each side of the net, with about four to six waiting per side. Two touches per side, then rotate off after every contact.

3v3 Warmup 2-touch setup: three on each side of the net, waiting lines off court, two-touch send-over
Three on, waiting lines off the court. Two touches, then rotate off.

How to run 3v3 Warmup: 2-touch

  1. Put three players on each side of the net. Queue about four to six more per side off the court, depending on your roster.
  2. Initiate with a coach toss or a player toss over the net.
  3. Each side gets two touches, and both are required. The first contact should set or save to a teammate. The second contact must send the ball over. You cannot one-touch it over.
  4. As soon as a player contacts the ball, they run off. The next waiting player fills that spot. The remaining on-court player is in support, and the ball comes back fast.
  5. Keep playing until the ball drops or an error is made. Play for points per side or until everyone is warm.

Why 3v3 Warmup: 2-touch works

Partner passing puts half the gym on autopilot. This 3v3 warmup spikes the pace, breaks the usual three-touch pattern, and gets everyone moving so practice starts locked in instead of sleepy.

Watch for

  • Both touches are used. One-touching the ball over is not allowed.
  • The player who just contacted the ball leaves the court immediately.
  • The next waiting player fills that spot before the ball comes back.

Common failure

Players stay after they touch, so three become four and nobody knows who is in the play. Pause, reset three on each side, and restart with touch and you are off.

3v3 Warmup: 2-touch FAQ

What is a good 3v3 volleyball warmup drill?
3v3 Warmup: 2-touch is built for that: three on each side, a two-touch limit, and rotate-off after every contact so waiting players keep cycling in at a high pace.
How many players do you need for 3v3 Warmup: 2-touch?
Eight or more works. You need three on each side plus a waiting line. Four to six waiting per side is comfortable. With fewer players, shorten the waiting lines and keep the same two-touch and rotate-off rules.
Can you one-touch the ball over in this drill?
No. Both touches are required. If the first contact is a save, the second player still has to get the ball over. That constraint is what breaks the usual three-touch warmup pattern.
How do you score 3v3 Warmup: 2-touch?
Play until the ball drops or a side makes an error. Award a point to the other side, or run it without a scoreboard until everyone is warm. Either way, reset three on and toss the next ball in fast.
