What is the Straddle Drill for serve receive reading? The Straddle Drill assesses volleyball serve receive reading. Two players stand in ready position with hands at their sides while a coach underhand-bowls balls over the net. Instead of passing, each player moves so the ball bounces between their legs without hitting them. Coaches quickly see who can read the ball path and who freezes or runs to the wrong spot.

Setup

Coach and ball cart on one side of the net. Two players on the other side, spaced evenly, with a waiting line behind them.

Straddle Drill setup: coach and ball cart on one side, two ready players and a waiting line on the other, ball landing between the legs
Hands at your side. Let the ball bounce between your legs. Fetch, cart, line.

How to run Straddle Drill

  1. Put two players on one side of the net, spaced evenly, with a waiting line behind them. Coach stands with a ball cart on the other side.
  2. Coach underhand-bowls the ball over the net at, in front of, or next to a player. Start mostly at them so they can find the landing spot.
  3. Receiving players set a low ready position with hands at their sides. They do not pass. The job is to move so the ball bounces right between their legs without hitting them.
  4. If the ball bounces in front and hits the chest, or clips the legs, they were too close or too far. Reading the path and getting the body there is the whole point.
  5. Wherever the ball finishes, that player grabs it, returns it to the cart, and joins the waiting line on their side. The next player steps on for the next toss.

Move the toss (reading progression)

  1. Once straight-on bowls look easy, throw shorter so players have to move forward to get the bounce between their legs.
  2. Then move the toss laterally so they have to read left/right and close the space without standing tall and sprinting past the ball.
  3. Run it at a high pace if you also want conditioning: continuous fetch-to-cart cycles will exhaust a group that is reading and moving.

Why Straddle Drill works

Serve receive looks like deer-in-headlights: players freeze, stand up, or chase the wrong spot because they cannot read where the ball is going. You need a fast way to see who can read and who needs work before you pile on platform coaching.

Watch for

  • Players stay low in ready position with hands at their sides, not reaching to pass
  • The ball lands between their legs without hitting them in the chest or legs
  • Movement starts from a read, not a panicked stand-up sprint to the wrong spot
  • After the bounce, players fetch the ball, return it to the cart, and rejoin their line so reps stay continuous

Common failure

Players stand up and run to the wrong spot, so the ball bounces in front or hits them. Reset: demand a low ready position, bowl softer and closer first, then move the toss only after they can land the ball between their legs.

Straddle Drill FAQ

What drill helps deer-in-headlights players in serve receive?
The Straddle Drill isolates reading before platform work. Players stay in ready position with hands at their sides and move so a coach-bowled ball lands between their legs. You see immediately who can read the path and who freezes or runs to the wrong spot.
Do players pass the ball in the Straddle Drill?
No. Hands stay at the sides. The only goal is body position: get the bounce between the legs without getting hit. Passing comes later once reading looks cleaner.
How many players do you need for the Straddle Drill?
Four or more works well: two on the court plus a waiting line, with a coach tossing from the ball cart. With a small group, keep two on and cycle quickly so everyone still gets reading reps.
How do you make the Straddle Drill harder?
Move the toss. Start at the body, then bowl short or off-line so players must read and close space. Run it fast enough and the fetch-to-cart loop also becomes conditioning.
