Setup

3v3 Warmup No hitting setup: three on each side, waiting lines, three touches then rotate off
Three on. Three touches. Every player contacts once. No hitting. Rotate off.

How to run 3v3 Warmup: No hitting

  1. Put three players on each side of the net. Queue waiting players off the court on each side, depending on your roster.
  2. Initiate with a coach toss or a player toss over the net.
  3. Each side must use three touches, and every on-court player must take one of them. First contact receives, second sets or redirects, third sends the ball over without a hit.
  4. As soon as a player contacts the ball, they run off. The next waiting player fills that spot. Choose who gets the next touch on purpose (setter vs outside vs DS) so the third contact is clean.
  5. Keep playing until the ball drops or an error is made. Play for points per side or until everyone is warm.

Why 3v3 Warmup: No hitting works

Warmups get mindless when every rally looks the same. This 3v3 forces a three-touch sequence with all three players involved, so athletes have to think about who takes which ball and how to send it over without a swing.

Watch for

  • All three touches are used, and every on-court player contacts the ball once.
  • No hitting. The third contact sends the ball over without a swing.
  • The player who just contacted leaves the court immediately so the next waiting player can fill the spot.

Common failure

Someone hits the 3rd ball.

3v3 Warmup: No hitting FAQ

What is a 3v3 volleyball warmup with no hitting?
3v3 Warmup: No hitting puts three players on each side with a mandatory three-touch sequence. Every on-court player must touch the ball once, the third contact goes over without a swing, and each player rotates off after their contact.
How is 3v3 Warmup: No hitting different from 2-touch?
2-touch allows only two contacts and any two players can finish the rally. No hitting requires all three touches and all three on-court players, then sends the ball over without a hit. Both use rotate-off after every contact.
Can you hit the third ball in this drill?
No. The third contact must send the ball over without a swing. That keeps the focus on decision-making and controlled contacts instead of chasing a kill in the warmup.
How many players do you need for 3v3 Warmup: No hitting?
Eight or more works. You need three on each side plus a waiting line so rotate-off stays continuous. With fewer players, shorten the waiting lines and keep the three-touch, everyone-touches, no-hitting rules.
